Future of Wireless Technologies
The future of wireless technologies is exciting. Developments are enhancing not only transmission
speeds but also the types of information (e.g., multimedia and video) that can be
transmitted from one user to another. These advances continue to shape and enhance wireless
communications.
The move toward 3G technology is a much anticipated development. Companies are
working with multiple standards, technologies and protocols to find the best 3G solutions
for future communications. Fourth-generation technologies, which are in early developmental
stages, could be available by 2010. 4G developments could increase the capacities
five to ten times beyond that of 3G networks. Many developers and users feel that multi-

media communications will be the dominant transmission type of the future so 3G and 4G
network speeds are critical.56 Devices could include holographic phones and mobile virtual-
reality machines. Companies, such as NTT DoCoMo, are committing as much as 80
percent of their workforce to the development of future generation networks.57
This chapter overviewed of the existing and future technologies, protocols, programming
languages and platforms designed for mobile communications. The next chapter,
Palm and Palm OS, takes an in-depth look at specific devices that use Palm technology in
conjunction with the technologies discussed in this chapter. We examine devices manufactured
by Palm™, Sony® and Handspring®. We discuss the Palm operating system and how
it works. We explore various applications for these devices. Finally, we will look at the
PDA market and emerging developments from Palm in wireless communications.
