Managing the network for profitability remains the biggest challenge facing broadband
wireless operators. Installing and operating the physical plant is fairly straightforward; the
integration of the various kinds of business software necessary to make it all function smoothly
with little routine human intervention is not. Network operators are advised to select OSS and
security platforms early in the planning process, rather than waiting until the network build is
completed. Attempting to operate a network manually without automating the various business
functions initially is almost certainly to begin operating at a deficit, with the prospect of
deepening that deficit with every day that automation is forestalled.
