Mobile Voice Equipment

Mobile voice can be supported on some 802.16-compliant equipment, but at present no
one makes an 802.16 phone. IP Wireless, a broadband wireless equipment manufacturer that
makes a cellular telephone–like high-speed infrastructure platform, currently supports voice
as well as high-speed data, however. Any mobile voice offering over broadband wireless could
not be done through a simple overlay because of the requirement for base station handoffs but
would require a base station controller, such as the IP Wireless product, designed from the
ground up to perform handoffs.
