Routing Information Protocol (RIP)

by

image

Nowadays, the most commonly used protocol in the Internet is called the
RIP, and it is a refinement of the GGP protocol based on the distance vector
[11]. Two distinct types of machine participate in this protocol: active, if it
can receive and transmit messages for updating tables, normally gateways,
and passive, if it only receives messages, usually, hosts.
The distance vector in this type of protocol is based on the number of
intermediate gateways, in the same way as in GGP. Nevertheless, the distance
is increased artificially to reflect the real capacity of the different physical
networks.
