Frame Control Field
The following defines each of the subfields with the Frame Control field:
• Protocol Version field For the current standard, the protocol version is zero; therefore,
the Protocol Version field always contains 0. IEEE will add version numbers in the future
if a newer version of the standard is fundamentally incompatible with an earlier version.
• Type field This field defines whether the frame is a management, control, or data
frame as indicated by the bits in the following table:
bit3, bit2 Frame Type
0, 0 Management frame
0, 1 Control frame
1, 0 Data frame
1, 1 Reserved • Subtype field This field defines the function of the frame, as shown in the following
table:
Frame Type Subfield Frame Function
(Bits 7,6,5,4)
Management Type 0000 Association Request
(bit 3, bit 2)=00
0001 Association Response
0010 Reassociation Request
0011 Reassociation Response
0100 Probe Request
0101 Probe Response
0110–0111 Reserved
1000 Beacon
1001 Announcement Traffic Indication Map
(ATIM)
1010 Disassociation
1011 Authentication
1100 Deauthentication
1101–1111 Reserved
Control Type 0000–1001 Reserved
(bit 3, bit 2)=01
1010 Power-Save (PS) Poll
1011 Request to Send (RTS)
1100 Clear to Send (CTS)
1101 Acknowledgement (ACK)
1110 Contention Free (CF) End
1111 CF End + CF ACK
Data Type 0000 Data
(bit 3, bit 2)=10
