Substitution

Substitution is a powerful method to isolate EMC problem causes and cures. For example, one of the most telling substitutions to make to resolve a receiver desensitization problem is to remove the antenna and measure sensitivity "conducted" (i.e., with the receiver not in a TEM cell, but directly connected to a signal generator). If the desensitization is not present when conducted sensitivity is measured, it is an indication that the interference pathway passes through the antenna. This, in turn, is a likely indication that the root cause of the problem is inductive or capacitive coupling, instead of conductive coupling.
